God has instructed us to declare Monday May 1, 2017 as a day of Fast for Bible Faith Family of Churches.
To this end it would be good to review some scriptures about Fasting and set ourselves in agreement to do what God has asked of us.
In these next two issues, let us look at a brief instruction on the practice of Biblical Fasting.
First it's important to briefly outline the two types of Fasting.
1. Proclaimed Fast
Joel 1:14 - Consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly; gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD. (NKJ)
Joel 2:12 - "Now, therefore,'' says the LORD, "Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.'' (NKJ)
2. Personal Fast
Matt. 6:16-18 - "Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17""But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 ""so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. (NKJ)
In the first instance, a Proclaimed Fast, we see that the purpose is to bring believers into a place of hearing from God in a corporate setting. Let us look at the Old Testament first.
2 Chr. 20:1-6 - It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them besides the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat. 2 Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, ""A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar'' (which is En Gedi). 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
4 So Judah gathered together to ask help from the LORD; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. 5 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6 and said: ""O LORD God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? (NKJ)
Notice that God then spoke:
2 Chr. 20:15 - And he said, "Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the LORD to you: "Do not be afraid nor dismayed
because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's. (NKJ)
Now in the New Testament we see this again:
Acts 13:1 - Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. (NKJ)
Acts 13:2 - As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'' (NKJ)
A proclaimed fast is useful because it causes unity and singleness of purpose. It can produce power because it operates like the prayer of agreement.
In our instance we are unified in the purpose for each location of Bible Faith Church.
Bible Faith Church of Toronto - we are in unity to be completely Debt-Free in order to use our resources to fulfill the Great Commission outlined in Mark 16:15-18.
Bible Faith Church of Durham - we are in agreement to move to a more convenient location that would allows us to do the work of the Great Commission.
I encourage you on the Declared Day of Fasting, May 01, 2017 to agree with us for these outcomes.
In the May Updater, we will look at the second instance, Personal Fast.
Remember to say the following aloud with conviction, “I’m believing to be at the Right Place, at the Right Time saying the Right Thing and the Right Thing to say is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
